Andrews wins £1m Southend Airport private hire contract

Andrews Taxis, which covers Southend and Rochford, has beat competition from several national taxi companies to secure the exclusive right to provide private-hire cars for the fast-expanding Southend Airport.

Andrews managing director John Watson (left) signed the exclusive deal with Southend Airport's head of business development, Jonathan Rayner. The deal, which goes live on February 1, 2012, is worth an estimated £1 million a year to the firm, and will create 30 new jobs, including new drivers, controllers and admin staff to cope with the predicted boost to business.

Southend Airport is in the middle of a multi-million pound expansion to increase the number of passengers passing through its doors to two million a year by 2020. A £10 million terminal building, a new control tower and a new railway station will open this year. Budget airline easyJet is due to start flights to at least eight overseas destinations in April, in addition to existing flights to Ireland run by Aer Arann.
