BYD UK’s Malcolm Fryer (left) and Marc Samuel celebrate BYD’s double triumph

BYD Seal is 2025 Professional Driver Car of the Year

The BYD Seal has been crowned Professional Driver’s 2025 Car of the Year award. The electric saloon also won the Private Hire Car of the Year category, making it one of six finalists for the big prize, where it triumphed over cars from Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Professional Driver Editor Mark Bursa said: “BYD is a new brand in the market that is making a lot of friends in the private hire world.”

“The BYD Seal is stylish, practical and affordable, and backed by years of experience in the EV market. With a great combination of comfort, build quality, EV range – and affordability – it will bring electric motoring within reach of many more drivers and operators.”

The Professional Driver Awards are among the most rigorous in the automotive industry. There are six categories in total, and a one-day judging event is held at Epsom Racecourse in August with an invited audience of Professional Driver readers who test and score more than 50 cars on the day.

The awards were announced at the Professional Driver Awards dinner at the Brighton Metropole Hotel on January 16, 2025.

In other categories, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz was named MPV of the Year; the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV was voted Luxury SUV of the Year and the new BMW i5 Touring claimed the Estate Car of the Year crown.

BMW scooped a second prize with the i7 being selected as  Chauffeur Car of the Year, while the Mercedes-Benz E300e was chosen as Executive Car of the Year – the only hybrid winner; all other category winners were battery-electric cars.
